We invite you to take a virtual walk through what is left of the Jewish quarter after the demolition of the '80s: quiet streets, guarded by chic houses, with small courtyards or gardens. Together we will discover the story of the formation of the Jewish community in Bucharest, we explore different synagogues and the newly renovated Coral Temple, a copy of the Tempelgasse Synagogue in Vienna that was destroyed by the Nazi but also the Jewish State Theatre , one of the few professional Yiddish-language theatres left in Europe dating back 140 years. It is an important part of the cultural landscape of Bucharest.
The Jewish neighbourhood is one of the few areas of Bucharest that survived Ceausescu’s demolitions. One of the best parts of this online experience will be our “walk” along the charming streets of the city’s picturesque Jewish quarter. No other part of the city has the nostalgic feel of this beautiful but often forgotten neighbourhood.
For the architecture lovers among you, we’ll be seeing buildings built by a few iconic Romanian-Jewish architects, such as Marcel Iancu and Jean Monda. Buildings we pass run the gamut of architectural styles, from Bauhaus, to Modernist, to Art Deco.
